  • May you rest in peace, Saint Albert. We'll see you again!

Albert Hofmann, the pioneering Swiss chemist and advocate of psychedelics who discovered the hallucinogenic properties of LSD, died Tuesday. He was 102.

"Hofmann reportedly died of a heart attack at his home in Basel, Switzerland.

Hofmann's most famous discovery happened on April 16, 1943. He was researching the synthesis of a lysergic acid compound, LSD-25, when he inadvertently absorbed a bit through his fingertips. Intrigued by the effect it had on his perception, Hofmann decided further exploration was warranted. Three days later, on April 19, he ingested 250 milligrams of LSD, embarking on the first full-fledged acid trip. That day became known among LSD fans as "bicycle day" because Hofmann began experiencing the drug's intense effects on his bicycle trip home from the lab.

In his autobiography, LSD, My Problem Child, Hofmann remembered his discovery this way:

"In a dreamlike state, with eyes closed (I found the daylight to be unpleasantly glaring), I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colors. After some two hours this condition faded away."

The experience led Hofmann to begin experimenting with other hallucinogens and he became an advocate of their use, in both the arenas of psychoanalysis and personal growth. He was critical of LSD's casual use by the counterculture during the '60s, accusing rank amateurs of hijacking the drug he still refers to as "medicine for the soul" without understanding either its positive or negative effects.

In a celebration of Hofmann's 100th birthday in 2006, Hofmann told the crowd of well-wishers -- which included 2,000 researchers, scientists, artists and historians -- that "LSD wanted to tell me something. It gave me an inner joy, an open mindedness, a gratefulness, open eyes and an internal sensitivity for the miracles of creation."

Hofmann was also the first scientist to synthesize psilocybin, the active ingredient in psilocybin mushrooms, in 1958."

An excerpt from the journal written by Alex Grey on his portrait of Albert Hofmann

"St. Albert and The LSD Revelation Revolution"

"In my portrait of Dr. Hofmann, the eye of transcendental spirit in the upper left hand corner of the painting releases spiralic streams of primordial rainbow spheres of potential, one of which becomes a compassionate alchemical angel, whose tears drip down to anoint or 'create' the LSD molecule that the doctor holds in his hands, and a demon, here identified with Nazi power tugs or pushes at it. LSD opens a visionary gateway to the heart, as shown by the spiral of fractally infinitizing eyes resembling the stripey eye-spheres of the molecule, swirling into the center of the chest. On St. Albert's shoulder blade is a portrait of Paracelsus, the Alchemist of Basel, 500 years ago, who is credited with founding modern Chemistry, yet his alchemical goal was to discover the Philosopher's Stone. Alchemy was the art and science of the transmutation of the elements, like turning lead into gold and the identification of the soul of the alchemist with the chemical transformations as a metaphor of their journey ti enlightenment. Modern Chemistry took the psyche and mystery out of the material weighed and measured world, reducing the world to a heap of atoms. LSD brought psyche back, front and center to the chemical material world. That is partly why I believe that LSD is the Philosopher's Stone, the discovery of which, also in the town of Basel, is the result of an alchemical process put in motion by the great Paracelsus. In the portrait, I painted a lot of LSD personalities and symbolism in the aura of Dr. Hofmann. Some of these people were Dr Hofmann's friends, like Aldous Huxley, Gordon Wasson, Maria Sabina and Richard Evans Schultes. Each of these people had a special connection to psychedelics. Huxley wrote fearlessly about the psychedelic experience in The Doors of Perception and Heaven and Hell, which also talks about Visionary states and works of art."

          • For many years duing the 70's there was this great street drug testing organization in the US which the government let be, whereas you could send in your drug for analysis using no return address and only a code number associated with it and your general area (like Northern Calif.) plus like a $12 USD fee. Then after about a week you could call their number from a payphone and punch in the code and get a readout on everything in the drug. I used it sucessfully and then let them send me my results to a p.o. box. From the thousands of samples sent in they compiled a monthly list by area of the different drugs sent in from what general areas, physical description and purity and additives. So you could all know pretty much what you were buying. The Feds never came a knockin and I used that service for at least 10 years. It also gave prices like High Times market quotes, but was much more refined. Does anyone know of such a service available today and that it has been safely used? Probably the postal clerks got to stealing those envelopes adressed to the testing place; oh yea! that's probably why there was that rash of postal clerks gone postal, because lots of weird street shit got sent in. Almost no strycnine in the acids, but got to be real weak acid as the years went by. So you had to take 8-10 hits to get gone. This is your weekly drug history report from 'ye ole geezer'. • Motubu, yes the 750 to 1000 mics of L is as awsome as awesome can be. Not to diminish the wonder of dmt, which is a different awesome and thank my lucky stars that I live in a time when I have such choices. And isn't it coincedental that while the world is controlled by forces that are as mature as muscle-flexing locker room jocks, missiles in hand, ready to square off with the next whoever, to prove that might makes right, and "Yo Mama" shithead rants, and my Jesus will kick your Mohammad's ass, and we're invading to remove weapons of mass destruction, oh, no, that was to free the Iraqi people, or what else would you swallow now that we've got you brainwashed enough to swallow your own tongue. oil?, what oil? Is oil even a word any longer. And the rest of the populace swoons with terror at having faced world destruction daily since 1946. AND what appears on the scene - LSD, dmt, Ayahuascha, etc. And what would happen to this world if everyone was initiated into these sacraments at puberty. HERE IT IS. Every leader should have to publically answer all questions to his population live on TV while having been injected with 1000 mics L (well, maybe 500) Closeups on their eyes. If there is another solution to the madness I would like to hear about it. Sound extreme? Look around you. Let's cut thru the bullshit.

Brother Motumbu, I've read your rants against the machine and your gentle words of encouragement and love to others, and I usually cry to hear a man so brave to stand up for the future of the little children, for the future generations, for spirit, for truth. I see you as a man as great as a Jesus, a Buddha, and the others who also spoke the truth thru intellect coupled with love/passion. Their messages got twisted with time. I believe that a majority of humanity could also become Santos thru the sacred medicines.

Brother Motumbu, the sad reason that L in the USA has gone weak, gone contaimanated, or just gone is because the government, fearing that this sacrament would interfere with the amount of output that the meat-slaves could devote to their economic sector, the Feds started manufacturing their own L, and producing the bad acid that would scare people, and the weak L that would make it useless unless one spent $100 USD to get enough to see god. These are the same people that refused to believe in global warming because, hey, even if it was true, it would cause an economic downturn, a burden, to fix it. So lets destroy the planet for our grandchildren so we don't have to drive a smaller car today. This is the logic of - because it's cold outside lets light the furniture on fire and then the whole house.

Lets keep fighting for world domination, which has always been such a successful long-term stratagey, like the Roman Empire, the Spanish Empire, the Portugese, the British and now the new devils on the block, the USA and it's dumbed-down populace meek as sheep. Yes, this proclaimed land of liberty, truth and justice poisoned its own people with drugs and false gods. And thru excellent marketing got the populace to believe that the Gucci bag or the Prada heels or the young man seated in the sports car makes one worth more, so a silly set of brainwashed creatures twirling around with their new branded bawbles, drunk with delight that they are so cute, are thrown in jail if they try to see the natural jewel-like quality of their own consciousness. When your high on 1000 mics how do these material girls and boys look then? Like demon robots. They're thrown in jail for using consciousness expanding sacraments because doing so would make them a less-profitable consumer. And the tired, spiritually bereft populations of the world have accepted all this and so much more.

If anyone is not angry, then I can only pity you for being so shut down mentally and emotionally, or so incredibly evil that I will pay for your dose and help you shake those demons. If ever there was a cause for revolution in the world, this is it. Not a bloody revolution, but a revolution of the mics and three white-smoke hits. Little things, inexpensive, VERY POWERFUL TRANSFORMERS.

If you live in a socialist country, then you have no idea what it's like to live under the heavy hand of unfettered capitalism. But you do know that you will be squeezed by the Global march of the big machine. Why do you think the US has accumulated more arms that all other nations on earth put together. Why do you think Bush said he would strike pre-emptively at ANY country that tried to build their arsenal to compete with the USA. That was ALL countries he was speaking to. Translation, if the Russian uparm, a pre-emptive attack is what they should expect. The Chinese, the British, the French, etc. the same. And as the global markets are manipulated by power-demons in the USA, you can watch as the price of food, energy, water, and clean air strangle all other nations. This is how the global corporations intend to take control, at first with guns, then with food, water, energy and air. Any nation that starts to pull out of poverty and is large enough to have economic power automatically is referred to as a threat by the US. Not, "glad you could come on up", but the "threat" (Japan a few years back, China now, Brazil next). A threat!!! While they talk about democracy, equality, justice there are just spiritually shriveled mentally deranged ghosts of humans behind those masks. Remember 40% of the american populace believe god created the universe 10,000 years ago. They believe that man is born evil and in a few short years their son-of-a-bitch, angry, father/nazi-furor "god" will come to burn alive in fire forever and ever to torture most of his own human creation.

Today there are 2,000,000 persons incarcerated in the USA. Many on marijuana charges. I've been waiting for the American eagle to stand up, spread it's wings and fly right now for 40 years. And what I see is that it looks more like a vulture with Gucci bag and Prada heels driving a Big SUV shit-ass drunk. And she's comin down the road straight at you. I travel alot and I see that the youth everywhere have swallowed the whole American whore identitly. Films, advertisements, etc. have shown the new generations that god comes wrapped in a package of celophane, is on the cover of a magazine. We can show them something so much better. Let's give it all away for free. Our sacred gift of spirit must not be contaminated by money. One human with one human, given freely, with love.

                • Nice words Larry.

Without getting into it too deeply, me thinks you give the US military industrial complex far too much credit. There is enough firepower stocked outside of its grasp to make an all out physical assault upon any part of the rest of the world completely useless. MAD still stands. The playing field has changed drastically since WWII. Brute military force is quickly becoming a thing of the past, despite what is being perpetrated in Iraq and Afghanistan, and despite futile US depopulation efforts to contaminate the world with DU (for it will ultimately poison its own citizens as well)... You've got all sorts of new blocks forming: the South American block, the US/EU block, the EU/Russia block, the Iran/Russia/China block etc etc. An intricate web, with ongoing power-pulls being waged at many *interdependent* levels. Anyways.

Nobody does LSD anymore? Not so. Far from even. It is everywhere, still, if you know where to look. Hello, new LSD research anyone? Previously considered untreatable psychological conditions anyone? We've come a long way, and still have a long way to go, and we are going strongly still.

                  Question for ya:

Who once proposed that LSD was the most important discovery in all of human history?
Who here knows who said that, hmmmmm.......?

Okay, I'll cut right to the chase 8)

  • Long before Timothy Leary urged a generation to "tune in, turn on and drop out," D-lysergic acid diethylamide (or LSD) was being used by researchers to understand the human mind. Discovered in 1943 by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann, LSD was hailed as a powerful tool to treat alcoholism and drug addiction and to provide a window into schizophrenia and other mental illnesses.

Much of that pioneering research was done by the team of Humphry Osmond, Abram Hoffer and Duncan Blewett, all working in Saskatchewan, Canada. While some researchers were establishing the medical benefits of LSD, others - like author Aldous Huxley - promoted the drug as a powerful tool for mental exploration and self-understanding. Timothy Leary, Ralph Metzner and Ram Dass (then known as Richard Alpert) became popular heroes after the university cancelled their Harvard research project into psychedelics.
