More important is to redefine our definitions, use new context.

We have a pattern machine, it doesnt think counsciously, its your subconscious. Your conscious mind or spirit isnt running the show most of the time. Its mostly an observer that self corrects once in awhile by speaking words of a new possibility. The minute your spirit speaks these words the pattern machine takes over, its not you making it happen.

The ego is an old term for a poor understanding of the human consciousness.

Who you are exists in language.

So its not getting rid of ego, its shutting down the meaning making machine that you are, because most of our meaning might be true, buts its all assumptions. Meditation is silencing the mind and its memory, to be a peace.

Put another way, what you know doesnt give you new answers for your present possible future. Intuition & imagination is the key to reality and more important than knowledge Einstine said. So the reason you meditate, let go of past, is that your past, you knowledge has very little to do with your present possible future and gets in your way.

You mind is always thinking, by day or at night in dreams, trying to process and store all these assumptions in your mind from your past. But how can you be present to what is, the moment in front of you, if you keep bring the past into it.

So its not letting go of ego, its quitting ego, its being present to the now, not the thoughts of ego which are only patterns from your past.
